Herstory tells the incredible true story of a six year long legal conflict of 10 comfort women and 13 attorneys against 200 Fukuoka supporters association, after Bae Jeong-gil suddenly and mysteriously disappears. It’s Not History, But Herstory. Herstory is about a very serious issue in history. It is about the Korean comfort women that were forced into sexual servitude by the Japanese military during World War II. This film has a great team working with it. Both the director and actors fantastic, and thankfully they deliver. This was outstanding film. Min Kyu-Dong does a Wonder job telling the story. It’s difficult to tell a story like this and feel authentic, but he manages to pull it off. In the film he never ask for you to cry, but to understand these women, and in return you feel all of the heart and passion put into this film as well as the struggle of the true life story. Min Kyu-Dong remains one of the most versatile directors working. He relies heavily on his script and cast. It’s a good thing they deliver. The cast as a whole was phenomenal, but it truly shines when they are by themselves. In particular the courtroom scenes. They all individually shine, creating a truly moving scene. Kim Hae-sook performance on the witness stand is riveting. Min never tries to tell an organic story, as these women all have their weaknesses and flaws. All of the Japanese characters weren’t
made to look like monsters, as some of them were portrayed in a positive way. Herstory does justice to the true-life story of Korean comfort women. Min Kyu-Dong and his cast excel at telling a heartbreaking, but authentic story. Herstory is one of the best films of the year.
