As of right now, the student showcase is my favorite part during HIFF. There were some struggles trying to watch it. The student showcase goes on that day and I just watched the last film on the previous day. So I was really debating if I should stay in bed or get up to watch the student showcase. I don’t regret a thing. Each film or animation brought something different. There was something for everyone.
The showcase started with different types of animations like stop-motion and traditional animation. There were a few animations that reminded me of when I started drawing. It was very simple and some didn’t really have a story. On the other hand, there were students who had experience with animation and drawing. These shorts just made me want to learn animation more in the future.
After the animations, the production of these films started to get more advanced. Each had their own message which was easy to understand. There were a lot of short films that focused on the environment and how humans need to treat the earth. It’s funny because I have one or two classes right now where I’m focusing on the environment. The one that stood out the most was the film where the Earth went to the doctors. The writing for that film was probably the best out of all the films and the message was easily understood even with all the humor.
Near the end, there was a lot of variety with the films, There were some short films that told a story. Some of them were PSAs that help shines some light on a problem we have on Earth. There was even a song parody about the environment.
After all that, I left the screening wanting to do some of my own projects. The student showcase shows that anyone can create art with the materials provided. It also shows that creativity and imagination come in many forms even if they are all giving the same message. If I go to HIFF next year, I will definitely put the student showcase on my list of things to watch.
