Mary and the Witch’s Flower is a Japanese film directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. It was released on January 18th, 2017. I went to go see this film at the HIFF festival on November 11th, 2017 at 3:00pm. This film is about a young girl that was granted magical powers from a strange flower that was able to make her fly and do amazing things with her mind. This leads to an adventure of a lifetime, but she gets into many obstacles along the way. The villains of the film want to use the magic from the berries for all the wrong reasons, and Mary must do whatever she can to stop them from doing so.
While I was in the theater watching this film, I was completely in awe. The animation was something very special. It was absolutely beautiful, there were so many amazing colors that were used throughout the whole entire film, and so much detail went into it as well and you could definitely tell. I loved the relationship that Mary had with the two cats, I related to it a lot and I thought it was adorable. I loved how they showed that the main cat, Tib, was looking out for Mary and his other cat friend. It showed that cats have just as many feelings and emotions as humans do. I thought it was really cute that Mary played this naïve and innocent character the whole film, and all she wanted to do was to help Peter and save the animals in the film that were being tested on with magic. I think this shows that even though children are very innocent and naïve, but they have huge hearts.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower is a magical movie in itself, and it deserves to be recognized. It’s breathtaking, beautiful, adorable, and lighthearted. Mary plays a strong little girl who will do anything to save her friends and always wants to do the right thing. I loved this film, it really moved me and made me feel really happy while I watched it. I would love to see it again.
