During this year’s HIFF Festival, I was able to see the thrilling, adrenaline filled, hilarious Korean film called, “The Sheriff In Town,” directed by Kim Hyung-ju. The Sheriff In Town is a 2017 South Korean film that followed the main character, Dae-Ho, who is an ex-detective that failed a mission that ended up with him loosing his badge. His partner was murdered during a mission by a drug dealer that helps out with the meth industry that’s thrives throughout the duration of this film. He ended up putting away the person that was being held hostage during the mission before he got his badge taken away. This man, named Jong-Jin, helped the drug dealers because he was their messenger, which makes him an accessory to the crime. Dae-Ho thought this was the last he was going to see of Jong-Jin, but he was very wrong.
Years later, he becomes the local sheriff without having the badge for his neighborhood. He has devoted his time to catching the people who are responsible to selling and transporting meth all over the country, and is determined to stop it. When he bumps into Jong-Jin again after he get out of jail and becomes a successful business man, he becomes suspicious of him that something else is going on and that he isn’t telling the full truth. Meanwhile, Jong-Jin is capturing the hearts of everyone around town, helping them with their businesses and being a friend to everyone. This makes it impossible for Dae-Ho to convince anyone that Jong-Jin was behind the meth problem in Korean and he was a major drug lord. To everyone else, he was just a nice businessman who didn’t fit the description at all. When Dae-Ho investigates Jong-Jin and eventually finds hard evidence against him, he was finally able to successfully put him away for the rest of his life. Dae-Ho was able to prove to everyone that he was right and got his badge back at the end of the film.
Throughout the film, the hilarious and shocking journey of Dae-Ho trying to convict Jong-Jin of this crime was really entertaining to watch and it was really well done. Being able to watch Dae-Ho get justice for his partner’s death was amazing. While watching this film, you become emotionally invested in the characters and you just want to scream at the screen to tell everyone that Dae-Ho is right. This is what is so great about the movie though, and I think that if anyone ever comes across this movie, you should take the time to watch it. You won’t regret it! This Korean film is one of the best comedic foreign films I’ve ever seen, I really enjoyed it.
