It’s official! HIFF is back! I have been waiting for this since the last time HIFF was on island. Opening night, and the theater was buzzing with excitement.
The lines were stretching out of the lobby and around the theater for Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s animated film, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, starting at 8 p.m. People were snacking of popcorn, candy and other concession stand goodies while waiting in line, and chattered amongst themselves to pass the time.
Guests were let into the theater thirty minutes before the film began, and two theaters were reserved for the animated film.
Before Yonebayashi’s film began, the assistant director welcomed guests, gave an introduction to HIFF, and reminded everyone to turn off their mobile devices. When the film ended, the crowd gave a round of applause and left the theater discussing their favorite parts and what they liked most about the movie.
HIFF’s red carpet was back as well, with guests taking selfies and group pictures all night.
Parking validation was available to all HIFF guests, so parking was completely free thanks to HIFF.
Overall the night was lively, full of excitement, and day one of HIFF is officially over. One down, nine more days to go!
