During the 36th annual Hawaii International Film Festival I watched three movies. Two of them: Finding Kukan, and Prison Dogs were documentaries, while the last one That Demon Within was an action movie. The reason for my choice of movies was that for Finding Kukan I was involved in the making of its film premiere poster. Also talking to the producer Robin Lung I really wanted to see if she found the Kukan movie. The reason for why I chose Prison Dogs is because my friend Josh Sheetz invited me to see it with him.
Prison dogs really changed the way I look at Inmates and Disabled Veterans. I am still thinking of the one disabled Veteran that had been a part of a helicopter crash. It was really sad to see him and his wife interviewed together and hears her talking about how it changed their life. I am really happy he got a service dog in the end that will help him out in every situation.
Lastly the reason for watching That Demon Within is because I am the Vice President of Akamai advertising club and we were part of the organizers behind the premiere at HPU.
My first meeting with the Hawaiian International film Festival was when I attended the Opening press conference in Waikiki. I got to talk to the organizers of the entire event, which made me aware of the effort that goes into creating a film festival.
The highlight of the film festival to me was when Josh and me got 10 seconds of fame posing with Robin Lung and the finding Kukan movie poster. It felt cool to have designed something that people related to people in Finding Kukan really felt was beautiful
In general I learned how a Film Festival is put on. For the first time I got to see how much work that actually goes into hosting something like that. Personally I was a small part of the press that covers the event, but from my understanding hundreds of people are involved in HIFF.
I would categorize The Hawaiian International Film festivals collaboration with Hawaii Pacific University as a professional experience for students. I would absolutely recommend it to family and Friends as I already have. I told my friends that the tickets were cheap and the movies very interesting. For future students I can only say this: Don’t miss it, and see as many movies as you can. The movies really make you think and view the world differently as there are many Asian inspired movies
