I watched three movies during the Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2016. They were “Headshot”, “Given + Aloha for Indo”, and “Bittersweet”. I chose those particular movies because Headshot and Aloha for Indo are related to Indonesia, the country I am from, and Bittersweet is a Japanese movie about food so I thought that it would be fun.
The first movie I saw, “Headshot”, I think is a nice quality movie because the visual effects are not too bad. I am pretty proud of it because the actions are also very good in my opinion. I was kind of shocked when I watched it because the movie is very sadistic, but I like the storyline though. It was very thrilling, fun, and also scary. It is the kind of movie that I only want to watch once.
The second movie I watched, “Given + Aloha for Indo”, is technically two movies. “Aloha for Indo” is a short documentary movie about three surfers from Kauai who went to Sumba, Indonesia to help them get clean water. It was so short, maybe like 6 minutes long. This short movie opened my eyes that turned out there is a place like that in my country that I did not know before. On the other hand, “Given” is a travel documentary about a family, also from Kauai, who travels the world to find a big fish. I really enjoyed watching this movie because of the cinematography. It was really fantastic, I even did not feel sleepy, which I usually do when I watch documentary movie. It is highly recommended! Especially if you like traveling.
The last movie I watched is “Bittersweet”. This movie is a unique movie because the storyline is something new for me. It is a movie about a girl who had a crush on a gay vegetarian guy. She hated vegetables but after living with the guy, she started to like it. I kind of disappointed with the ending of this movie though, but the movie is funny. It is also a movie that I only want to watch once.
The highlight from this last HIFF was when I watched “Given”, and turned out the director and the casts were all there and they gave us a Q&A session after we finished watching it. It was so cool to see them live.
I enjoyed attending this HIFF because I was able to see some international movies, which I won’t be able to do it outside of this event.
