On Wednesday afternoon while sitting in my Multimedia class I decided that I needed, and deserved a break from school. I logged onto the Hawaii International Film Festival website and searched for movies playing on November 8th. The site was very easy to navigate to a list of movies playing on that day and after going through a short preview of films I found the one.
Yosemite! I immediately knew it was the one. The cover photo initially excited me. Yosemite is a beautiful place that I had the privilege of taking a road trip to this past summer. I loved the fact that this fell into the category of New American Filmmakers and I was also stoked to see that James Franco was the leading actor.
So, when class ended I eagerly headed home to get a quick bite to eat and prepare for the night. On my exciting bike ride down to Dole Cannery Stadium 18 I made a pit stop to pick up some munchies for the film. This was a must. Arriving at the theatre just in time, but with no ticket in hand, I jumped into the press pass line. After showing him my badge, he simply gave a ticket for the movie. This was the easiest trip to the theatre I’ve ever had.
As far as the film went, overall I enjoyed it. Director Gabrielle Demeestere and her cast did a great job in producing a lighthearted film that showed the beauty of growing up in California during the eighties. The film gave me a warm feeling of nostalgia as it signified how I felt growing up as a boy.
The film didn’t have a hard task at hand while filming in Yosemite, as this is one of the most breathtaking places on earth. However, I feel they could have had some better shots of the beautiful scenery that was around them in the beginning part of the film. If they showed more beauty of this national park I think it could have had more of an impact on people who haven’t visited this place.
Because I have been to Yosemite, again I felt nostalgic. As I reflected back on what an amazing trip it was for me, this was a great movie for me to watch.
Lastly; I was pleased to have seen this film. I was having such a good night that I strolled into another movie, Love the Coopers. This was another great movie about Christmas time that I also recommend to you. Special Thanks to HIFF for the free movies!
