“The Hunting Ground” is a documentary directed by Kirby Dick that shines light on an important subject: rape at campuses in the United States. What can be surprising to some is that most of the colleges the movie investigates are Ivy League colleges, institutions that students have worked very hard to be admitted to, and parents have paid a lot of money for their children to attend. Some will leave with traumas that will affect them for the rest of their lives.
The documentary shows personal stories and interviews from girls who have been raped, it also shows numbers of how the university and even the police ignores the problem. The rapists at campus are often guys from fraternities and football teams but because of how important they are for the team and for the university’s economics, the case is being sugar coated.
The documentary focuses on two girls that are being interviewed and they also Skype with other girls who tell stories that are similar to their own. The girls didn’t give up when they were not being heard by the Dean at their universities and took action themselves and talked about what happened to them, they even had a press conference to shine light on their story.
It is a strong movie and the numbers they show on how many girls are being raped is shocking. What is also shocking is how the Dean of the universities ignores the problem in order to save their own job. It is a movie that should been shown to parents, students, the police and the faculty at universities. The movie showcases a huge and important problem that needs attention worldwide.
