Tuesday Nov. 4th, Creative Lab held an event with guest speaker Bernie Su. He is a talented director and storyteller most known from his interactive shows Frankenstein M.D and The Lizzie Bennet Diaries for PBS Digital Studios, based in Los Angeles.
He had a presentation where he talked about how they have managed to make the audience a part of the story they are showing by giving the characters real social media accounts and numerous other treats for example besides the show airing, it could also be that the character took a photo and that would end up on the character’s facebook page.
After his presentation, the energy in the room was high. Writers and other artists in the audience were as stated by the host “mind-blowing”. They learned a lot about how the media world works today and how writers has to adapt to the changing environment.
After listening to his presentation, I felt very inspired as this is a new way of making shows. All the platforms out there making it possible to remove the barrier between audience and ficitonal story.
I got to talk to Bernie Su after the event, and I have seen his show Frankenstein M.D in another class, and I liked it a lot. We talked about how times are changing storytelling and he felt blessed that his show could be used in teaching and education. For me, talking to a person who is directly from the working environment that I one day want to be a part of, was very inspiring. I surely learned a lot from his presentation and maybe one day I will cross paths with his company PBS Digital Studios when I have a job within the media industry.
