Beijing Love Story staring Tony Leung Ka Fai, Carina Lau, Wang Xuebing, Yu Nan, and Wang Qingxiang is a short romantic film telling the true story of love, and what the wholeness of the word means. Individuals from different generations examine the concept of love and all that it truly encompasses. Relationships are put under the microscope in the test of love.
Director Chen Sicheng brings forth five different couples from five very different walks of life in an examination of love. The five couples are all at different parts in their lives; a couple is in their teens, while another is well into their senior years. Sicheng does a good job of bringing these five couples together and examining their love. As love does not have only one face or form, Sicheng use the faces and diversity of these five couples to show the various existence of love in these relationships.
Within the film, Sicheng is able to very inconspicuously tell the love stories of these strikingly different couples while simultaneously intertwining and weaving them together. Each of the couple’s within the film has a very different and unique love story, yet they are all somehow connected. Their backgrounds are different, yet Sicheng is able to find very small aspects of their characters to relate to each other. All the characters tell each of their love stories, and connects back to the first couple with the last couple.
The film started off light, with the introduction of a very typical couple and love story. Then as the film progressed on, deeper love was examined. Sicheng did a good job of first using a typical couple to draw audience members into the film, and then hitting them hard with a more complex couple and relationship. The message of true love is shown in each of the couples, with the last couple truly embodying a deeper love and message.
