This years 32nd Hawaii International Film Festival featured many great films by many great directors. One of the many directors that stole the show at this years HIFF was Hayao Miyazaki as six of his animated films were featured as part of the Studio Ghibli retrospective series. Starting off the series was a free screening of his film Spirited Away, Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature, in Kaka’ako Gateway Park. Food trucks also lined the streets for people to purchase while games for the kids and a costume contest were going on. It was a sight to see as a crowded park filled with families and kids of all ages were introduced to such an amazing film. For those of us who were raised watching Miyazakis films, Spirited Away is a film that never gets old and continues to put us in awe as we’re sent into a fantasy life of mythical creatures and magic. And that goes for all of Miyazakis films as we’re sent into the life of the forest king in My Neighbor Totoro, or submersed into a futuristic war on a ruined earth in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Other films by studio ghibli that were shown included Pom Poko, Porco Rosso, and The Ocean Waves..
