On Saturday October 13, HIFF held a free screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s award-winning animated film Spirited Away in Kaka’ako Park. At the event there was acoustic musician, Eat The Street food trucks, a costume contest, a wishing tree, plenty of grass to lay on, and a large inflatable screen with the film projected on it. Shortly before the screening, HIFF staff held a couple games to keep the kids engaged. There was also an impressive cos-play of Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle. The costume was so effective that one could not tell if the person wearing the costume was male or female, capturing the sexual ambiguity of Howl. The crowd at sundown was decent, but once the film started, the park was packed with blankets and eager families.
HIFF this year showed six of Hayao Miyazaki’s films as part of their Studio Ghibli Retrospective series.
