BIFF! BOOM! POW! It wouldn’t be surprising if you first thought of comic book superheroes when you first read those three words. Big comic book fan? “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story” is definitely a film to see. This is no way a boring documentary about any old guy. Stan Lee is one of the most animated people you will ever witness for a man his age – 88 years young, and his birthday is coming up on December 28th. He’s just as active as the characters he helped bring to the world of comics.
This film revolves around the business life of one of America’s innovators that helped bring about the comic world, bringing forth dozens of beloved super heroes known worldwide including Spiderman, the Hulk, Iron Man and many others. The story shares his start in the newspaper as he started drawing with a few other cartoonist. With the help of many other talented artists, he manages to bring forth “the Bullpen,” which was the name of the office he and many other prominent cartoonists developed stories and characters. Many that worked there told their hilarious testimonies of how Lee would hop onto the desks to demonstrate how characters should look on the panels. Celebrities from many genres of film and television tell their tales of how Lee and his characters he helped create have impacted their lives. The film follows Lee throughout the years: his starts, his finishes, his troubles with the media, and even how he feels about his comic characters coming to life on the big screen as technology of today. The film also points out how Lee always seems to make a cameo in those movies along with how the actors felt about meeting the man who helped bring their character to the world and their hopes about doing them justice.
I would definitely recommend this film for comic book fans out there as well as those interested in media and communication as Stan Lee is not only an innovator in entertainment but an excellent businessman.
