I actually wanted to watch more movies from the world, but I could watch only two Japanese movies. However, “KAASAN” was much more great movie than I expected. This is really true story about Mrs.Saibara. She is Japanese comic artist, and has two children. Her husband Yutaka Kamoshida was a war cameraman and he has a trauma because of his experiences in the field of the war. Then he became really serious alcoholic and he must go to rehabilitation hospital. They actually divorced, but Rieko Saibara had never deserted Kamoshida although he betrayed Rieko so many times. When couple realized they could be a family together, Kamoshida already had a terminal cancer. Her actual life about this story was for ten years until Kamoshida’s death, so it was kind of hard to make shorter in only two hours film, but I didn’t feel any something wrong about this movie. The story isn’t about one only Japanese mom. This is about mothers in the world. I saw most of women in the theater were crying including myself, because they could share same feelings of Rieko even though we have different culture and life. There is nothing difference between Japanese mom and American mom. They are mothers every day. They don’t have any day to take a rest, but they are happy with being mom because we are women. Thank you for HIFF giving me a great chance to watch this movie!
